Yeah, you know, the woman taken to court by six large record label for making music available for people to share on the Internet. Well, get this: she’s not only been found guilty, but she’s been ordered to pay $220,000 in compensation. $220,000!

Thomas was fined $9,250 for every song she illegally made available on her Kazzaa account, which she said she didn’t own in her defense. She was found guilty of sharing 24 songs, although what these songs are was undisclosed. Apparently she shared some 1,702 songs in all.

The lowest she could have been made to pay was $750 per song, so you can be sure that they are trying to make an example out this poor woman with the massive amount of money they’ve called her out for.

This is a landmark ruling, and it’s one that’s sure to send ripples through the music industry. Are we to all live in fear now that the record labels are starting to bite back? This is just the beginning, and you can be sure that more cases will follow.

What’s big news here is the excessive amount of money Jammie Thomas has to pay. The 24 songs are worth, what, $24? Thomas did the same as millions of people around the world do every day.

The world has gone mad."

Free MP3s: Soundclick

<adsense>Another music sharing site? Yes it's soundclick a site where hopeful artists post their homemade music looking for a little attention.

Homegrown music?
You know how people go on American Idol looking to be "big stars"? Well I suppose that a service like Soundclick is a place to turn for those who didn't make it. They might have sounded bad on American Idol, but actually I was amazed by some of the unknown artists placing their music on Soundclick. Take this artist, auditory, rap isn't exactly my favorite music, but they do a pretty good job creating their own beats.

get started? visit soundclick.com

QTrax: Free Legal Mp3 Downloads

<adsense>qTrax just released with it's first beta version allowing you to download mp3 tracks both legally and free. They've decided to launch with PC support first, opting for a Mac release date on March 18th.

What does qTrax offer?
Free Legal Mp3 Downloads of course. But seriously, qTrax tells use ,"Qtrax is NOT just another P2P network, yet everything is legal. My question is of course is, if this is another p2p service, how will users be able to share files, yet keep everything legal? They are claiming that the advertising used in this service helps pay for the cost of each one of the downloads we make on the site. That and perhaps the lack of newly released music makes qTrax a very viable option for downloading music.

visit qTrax.com

Anywhere.fm acquired by Imeem

Irecieved an email today that Anywhere.fm has been acquired by file sharing service Imeem.

<adsense>"We are very excited to announce that Anywhere.FM has been acquired by
imeem (http://www.imeem.com), the leading social media network.

Since our launch last August, Anywhere.FM has been dedicated to making
it easy to upload, play, and share your music wherever you go. Maybe it's time for an upgrade. If you haven't tuned in yet, you might have missed out on DAB, the new digital radio broadcasting format.<adsense>

What is DAB?
DAB stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting. Its digitally broadcasted radio over the airwaves. This means higher, more cd like quality. DAB has the ability to fit more data within a single amount of airspace. This means offering many more stations in the same amount of frequencies.

DAB in America?
It seems the United States didn't jump on the DAB broadcast bandwagon. Instead, the US uses HD radio, a very similar technology. Instead, you'll find DAB in Canada and Europe. Click here to see if HD radio is available in your area.

Reciever?
Yes you will need a special HD reciever to experience HD radio. At the moment these are still pricey as HD radio has not yet been fully realized.

3 Free Music Song Downloads

<adsense>NowWhat.com is giving us 3 free music song download just for signing up. Searching on the internet can be a more legal, and quicker approach. Along comes the clickster...<adsense>

Clickster
Rather than connecting two computers together, Clickster lets us download legal mp3s online from the web. It searches the web for the best songs and files. Consider it a downloadable version of g2p.org, a site that searches google for music contained within it's webpages. Clickster will take that same approach and search all of the internet for you.

Download.com gave clickster 3 and a half stars out of 5. I'd rank it the same. Clickster won't find everything you are looking for, but a majority of it us, yes.

Get Clickster

FreeRip, Free Windows Mp3 Ripper

Need to convert your CD tracks to mp3? It can be much easier browser by letter rather than searching for a certain artist.

Visit Karadar</adsense>

100% legal mp3s, What is the Catch?

So you paid $25 for an mp3 program that claims that its services are 100% legal and with it you can download all the mp3s you want. Just a $25 sign up fee and you are ready to go. Don't pay it! All these 100% "legal" mp3 services is do is take money out of your bank account and give you programs that otherwise would have been free. What they aren't telling you is, these programs are illegal. It updates a new listing of free music tracks everyday with no songs hosted directly on SomeSongs, rather everything is linked to that respected artist's music site. Considering everything on this site is considered legal, you won't find the latest Madonna or Radiohead album, rather a mix of interesting tracks by artists like the Von Bots or Eftos.<adsense>

Is interesting better?
Some would say that the interesting range of free music out there is better than the music being promoted by rich record labels. Aren't artists just a little more creative when they have to fend for their own with no one supporting them? Most of the artists on SomeSongs will probably be your first and maybe last listen but, consider that the artists here are just trying to make good beats. Some of the free legal mp3s will even be infinately better than anything you'll here on a Record Label supported album.

Stereogum, Free Legal Mp3

Strange, free and legal doesn't seem to apply to Mp3s anymore. Even the RIAA is looking into search aggregators, those like elbo.ws that let us search through the mass of blogs and websites for songs. Can we blame them?<Adsense>

Stereogum's Free Mp3's
Stereogum likes to mix interesting music and let us download, completely for free. They take hit songs, non hits, all alike and combine stuff together for an interesting audio experience. You'd be surprised how two songs coming together can form something new, yet sometimes even better than the original. Try listening to the last batch of free legal mp3's stereo 9 vs Stereogum, more often than not, you've heard these songs before...

Visit Stereogum

PureVolume, Listen to Music Free Online

Listen to the top signed and unsigned artists online.
